In the heart of the enchanting rolling fields, lived a boy named Shepherd. His existence was essentially pure, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was essentially to tend to his flock of rams.
Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the gales among the lone tree on the mountaintop were his only associates. Day upon day, looking out for his wards instilled in him a notion of tranquil here contentment.
But, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. In one such instance out of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome plan.
Stories of predators prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy opted to leveraged this fear and played a prank on the townsfolk.
One morning he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills to offer assistance but discovered nothing threatening.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank continued for a few days more. However, one noon, a real wolf actually attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the results of false alarms.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is tough to regain. It's a story as pertinent today as it was anciently.
